The Difference Between Cloud PBX and PABX

The difference between Cloud PBX and PABX. Cloud PBX (Private Branch Exchange) and PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) are two telephone systems commonly used in business communication, but they differ as follows:

1. Physical Location:

A PABX is a physical, on-site telephone system located at the workplace. It usually consists of hardware such as phones, cables, and switches connected to the public telephone network. Cloud PBX is a cloud-based telephone system. All PBX functions are hosted in the cloud or on a remote server and accessed over the internet. No physical hardware is needed at the workplace.

2. Cost:

A PABX requires hardware installation costs and maintenance costs. You also need to pay for additional equipment if you want to expand the system or add features.

Cloud PBX does not require hardware installation costs because everything is hosted externally. Usually, you pay a monthly subscription fee based on the number of users and the features you need.

3. Scalability:

    • A PABX can be expanded by adding hardware such as extension cards. However, there are limits on the number of users and features a physical system can handle.
    • Cloud PBX is easier to expand because everything happens in the cloud. You can easily add or remove users, and additional features can be enabled easily through the user interface.

4. Accessibility:

A PABX can only be accessed locally at the workplace or through traditional wired phone lines.

Cloud PBX can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Users can use physical phones, softphone apps on a computer, or mobile apps to access the system.

5. Maintenance:

A PABX requires physical maintenance and routine care such as hardware repairs, cable handling, and software updates.

System maintenance for Cloud PBX is handled by the cloud service provider. Software updates and feature upgrades are done automatically by the provider.

The choice between Cloud PBX and PABX depends on your business needs. If you are looking for a more flexible, easily expandable solution that does not require a large investment in hardware, Cloud PBX can be a good choice. However, if you need full control over the telephone system and do not want to depend on an internet connection, a PABX may be the better choice.
