When implementing a cloud-based telephony system with a capacity of more than 5 IP phones, you are often advised to use an additional device in the form of an SBC. SBC stands for Session Border Controller. It is software or hardware used in telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) systems, to control and manage the flow of voice and data traffic in communication sessions. In 3CX there are 2 hardware options that can be used to deploy an SBC.
The first is a built-in router-phone. Several IP Phone types come with an SBC that can support up to 10 IP Phones, such as the Fanvil X4U-V2, X5U-V2, X6U-V2, X7-V2, X7C-V2, X210-V2, V62, V64, and V65 series

Or use a mini PC appliance that can support up to 100 IP Phones in 1 SBC.

Some reasons why an SBC is so important in a VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) communication system include:
- Security: An SBC acts as a barrier between the internal and external networks, helping protect the internal network from malicious attacks such as DoS (Denial of Service) attacks and attacks on the SIP protocol.
- NAT Traversal: In networks that use NAT (Network Address Translation), an SBC helps get past NAT restrictions, which can cause communication problems in VoIP.
- Call Quality: An SBC can improve call quality by providing functions such as bandwidth control and QoS (Quality of Service) control.
- Interoperability: An SBC enables good interoperability between VoIP devices from different vendors, ensuring smooth communication across different platforms and systems.
- Traffic Monitoring and Management: An SBC can provide efficient traffic monitoring and management, allowing network administrators to manage and optimize network performance.
- Integration with Public Networks: An SBC enables secure integration between the internal VoIP network and external VoIP service providers or public networks.
- Protection Against Attacks: An SBC can provide additional protection against various security attacks, such as brute-force attacks and authentication attacks.
Overall, the 3CX SBC is an important component of VoIP infrastructure that helps ensure the security, quality, and interoperability of voice communication.
