Sangoma SBC
Appliance & Cloud — a selection guide on when an SBC is truly required to connect Telkom SIP Trunks to Retell AI, VAPI, LiveKit, CloudTalk, Sprinklr, and Freshcaller.
Sangoma SBC—available both as an on-premises Appliance and as a Cloud/VM instance—serves as a bridging point between Telkom SIP Trunks (both on-premises and cloud-based) and various AI Voice Agent platforms. However, the requirement for an SBC varies depending on the target platform: while some platforms accept direct SIP trunk connections and treat TLS as optional, others explicitly mandate or recommend an SBC as part of their official architecture. This document outlines these requirements on a per-platform basis and details the role of Sangoma SBC in each scenario.
Why Telkom Trunks Cannot Be Directly Connected to AI Platforms
Telkom SIP Trunks are fundamentally engineered for traditional inter-PBX communication, whereas modern AI Voice Agent platforms rely on varying standards for signaling, security, and codecs. Without an appropriate bridging layer, three common issues typically arise:
-
Encryption — Conventional Telkom trunks generally run over unencrypted UDP, whereas several AI platforms recommend or mandate SIP over TLS along with SRTP media encryption.
-
Codec Mismatch — Telkom trunks typically utilize G.711/G.729, while many AI platforms require wideband codecs like Opus or G.722, necessitating real-time transcoding.
-
Network Security — Exposing a trunk directly to the public internet without a protective layer leaves the network vulnerable to unauthorized registrations, SIP flooding, and potential toll fraud.
What Is Sangoma SBC?
A Session Border Controller resides between the Telkom SIP Trunk and your internal communications infrastructure—whether an IP-PBX, contact center, or AI Voice Agent platform—performing four primary roles for every call session:
-
Interoperability & Transcoding — Bridges differences in codecs, signaling formats, and protocol variants across vendor platforms.
-
End-to-End SIP TLS & SRTP Encryption — Encrypts call signaling and media streams across the network path, preventing eavesdropping and tampering.
-
Routing, Load Balancing & Failover — Intelligently routes call traffic across multiple trunks or AI platforms simultaneously with automated failover capability.
-
Threat Protection & Toll Fraud Prevention — Detects and blocks suspicious registration patterns and trunk exploitation attempts in real time.
Two Deployment Models: Appliance vs. Cloud
Both deployment models deliver the same core functions. The differences lie in physical placement, investment model, and how capacity scales with growing call volume.

SBC Requirements by AI Platform — Verified Analysis
Not all platforms listed below technically require an SBC. The table below summarizes each platform’s stance regarding direct SIP trunks, TLS/SRTP support, and the role of an SBC based on their respective official documentation.
| Platform | Accepts Direct SIP Trunk? | TLS/SRTP Support | Role of SBC (e.g., Sangoma) |
| Retell AI | Yes, via SIP trunking / dial-to-SIP-URI | Supports TLS 1.2+; mTLS available for enterprise upon request (not mandatory by default) | Recommended: Secures and normalizes Telkom trunks prior to routing to Retell |
| VAPI | Yes; VAPI operates its own managed SBC on their side | Port 5060 by default; TLS on port 5061 only if enforced by security policy (optional) | Optional: Useful for transcoding and traffic control from Telkom trunks |
| LiveKit | Yes, supports various SIP providers out-of-the-box | “Secure trunking” (TLS+SRTP) is an opt-in feature, not enabled by default | Optional: SBC assists if Telkom trunk signaling formats need normalization |
| CloudTalk | Yes, via the BYOC (Bring Your Own Carrier) model | TLS/SRTP is generally supported by BYOC carriers; compatibility verified during onboarding | Optional: Simplifies Telkom trunk normalization into standard BYOC formats |
| Sprinklr (VoiceConnect) | Yes, and SBCs are explicitly listed as part of their official architecture | TLS/SRTP is optional but fully supported; includes built-in encryption & transcoding | Strongly Recommended: Hardware on-premises deployment options are available for strictly regulated regions |
| Freshcaller (Freshworks) | No (Direct connection not supported); trunks must be forwarded to a Twilio SIP domain (e.g., [email protected]) | Adheres to Twilio standards; mandates the G.711 codec | Required: Acts as a bridge to translate Telkom trunks into the format and IP whitelist required by Twilio-Freshcaller |
Important Note
None of the six platforms listed above mandate a customer-hosted SBC as the sole method of connectivity. The primary distinction lies in practical necessity: Sprinklr and Freshcaller explicitly integrate an SBC (or equivalent gateway) into their official network architecture, whereas Retell AI, VAPI, LiveKit, and CloudTalk natively accept direct trunk connections with TLS offered as an optional layer. Across all scenarios, Telkom trunks rarely support TLS/SRTP natively—making an SBC the most practical and efficient solution to bridge this gap without altering the underlying Telkom trunk configuration.
Why SIP TLS Remains Critical for Telkom Trunks
Although not all platforms strictly mandate TLS, industry best practices continue to push for end-to-end encryption—especially since Telkom trunks carry sensitive customer call data. Sangoma SBC manages TLS 1.2+ and SRTP negotiations on the interface facing the AI platform while maintaining full compatibility with the Telkom trunk setup on the other side. This ensures no unencrypted call data traverses the public internet.
